Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez was removed from the team’s 8-6 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday in the top of the seventh inning.

Alvarez was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts at the time and was replaced by Josh Harrison.  Alvarez was removed from the game “with discomfort and inflammation in his left knee,” according to Pirates Prospects.

Both Pirates Prospects and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Bill Brink report Alvarez will likely be out of game action through this weekend, but that there’s no indication it’s anything serious.

Read: The Pirates announced their Opening Day starter and starting rotation yesterday.

Alvarez has just four hits in 30 at bats this spring (.130), but does have two home runs. He has struck out 13 times.

Based on his spring struggles and his futile 2011 season, some have suggested Alvarez may start the season with AAA-Indianapolis. General Manager Neal Huntington says this is unlikely.

Alvarez has already proven he can hit AAA pitchers, but some more time in the minors to work on hitting some off speed stuff might not be the worst thing for him. He’s really struggling right now and I’m not sure he’s ready to compete as the team’s everyday third baseman.

Hopefully I’m wrong.
