Fans of the Steelers have been waiting for Rashard Mendenhall to break out of his shell for sometime now. Pittsburgh has a reputation around the NFL of being a smash mouth football team. They have always been among the league leaders in rushing, but in recent years they have swayed from their identity. Pittsburgh has not finished in the top 10 in rushing since the 2007 season. This year’s team is on pace to finish 16 out of 32. Not exactly what you would expect from the Black and Gold.
Mendenhall has been held under the century mark for all but two games this season. His yard total is up to 890 after yesterday’s win against St. Louis. His only other game over 100 yards came back in week 6 against Jacksonville.
The offensive line has been suspect at best this season, and to be fair, they have been fighting the injury bug all season. Maurkice Pouncey, arguably Pittsburgh’s best lineman, has been battling injuries all year and has not been the same since suffering an ankle injury prior to Super Bowl VLX.
If the Steelers have any aspirations of making a run in the playoffs, they must get back to what made this franchise who they are today: Running the football and controlling both sides of line of scrimmage.
