Well, it looks as if there isn’t much to the narrative that Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger wouldn’t have a good relationship working together.  Roethlisberger has come out recently, saying that while he’s had to learn this new offense, he’s excited and hasn’t had any problems working alongside Haley.  Initially, I (like everybody else) thought that having these two guys on the same team could potentially reap disaster, seeing as how he and the Kansas City Chiefs aren’t exactly exchanging Christmas cards.  But it seems as if there isn’t much danger of that, right now, which you have to like if you’re a Steelers fan.

Obviously, a good relationship between the offensive coordinator and the quarterback can work to make an offense run smoother.  The quarterback knows what the offensive coordinator wants to accomplish in a certain situation and the offensive coordinator begins to understand the tendencies of his quarterback (along with the much-ignored quarterbacks coach).  This may not seem like something worthy of mention, but we’ve seen what happens to quarterbacks in the NFL when they are victims of constant change at the offensive coordinator position.  Granted, this is only one change and there’s no sign of trouble, as of yet, but good, continual offensive coordinator-quarterback relations are, nevertheless, important to the success of a team because the quarterback doesn’t have to keep learning different stuff.

However, given Haley’s history with the Arizona Cardinals and the Chiefs, I’m not sure this peace is going to continue to exist.  Dust-ups are likely most possible when the team is under the most stress.  While this is likely one of those times (considering all it takes to get prepared for the season), skirmishes can occur many times during the season.  Keep in mind, the Steelers are implementing an offense that focuses more on the ground game, rather than the aerial attack.  While I’m sure Roethlisberger will be plenty busy this season, there could be some conflict between what he wants and what Haley wants to do.  I’m certainly not wishing trouble upon them, by any means.  I’m one of those people who never wishes for a team to have bad things happen to them or for them to do poorly just to create storylines.  But, hey, the Steelers took on Haley knowing the fallout that could come from it.  Let’s hope they don’t have to regret it, later.  I’m David Abeyta and that’s my opinion.
