NFL Rumors: Mike Wallace Will Return to Pittsburgh Steelers Before Regular Season?
I’m just as sick and tired of sitting around and waiting for Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace to return to the team as much as everyone else is. The latest word through the grapevine is that Wallace will in fact report to the team before the regular season opener against the Denver Broncos.
However, I don’t expect the Pro Bowl receiver to report to Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA for training camp, because the Steelers are set to break camp this Friday.
The question is exactly when Wallace will decide to join the rest of his team. It’s evident that playing in the second preseason game this coming Sunday versus the Indianapolis Colts isn’t going to happen. This gives the speedy wideout a small window to get on the same page with new offensive coordinator Todd Haley and the rest of the offense.
General manager Kevin Colbert is still patiently waiting for Wallace to show up to sign his $2.7 million restricted free-agent tender so that further discussions can take place for a possible contract extension for the fourth-year pro.
While head coach Mike Tomlin and the rest of the Steelers wait for their leading receiver to return to the practice field, many teammates of Wallace have been keeping in touch and letting it be known that there will be no grudges held once Wallace decides to join the team.
Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor has taken it a step further and has let Wallace stay at his home in Orlando, FL while training on his own with a trainer.
I think knowing that Wallace is still on good terms with his teammates and that he is doing what he can to stay in shape is all fine-in-dandy. However, this has been drawn out as far as it could possibly go. There is nothing else to say about this situation. Wallace needs to sign his contract and kill this unnecessary distraction.
One thing I do believe is that if Wallace doesn’t put up number that are even close to what he has done for the past two season for the Steelers, that the backlash he will receive from Steelers fans won’t be pretty.
