The whirlwind recruitment of star wide receiver Laquon Treadwell is finally coming to a close. Yes, the number one receiver in the class of 2013 has set a final date to which he’ll announce his college selection: January 17th, 2013. The announcement will come after he takes his final official visit to the Oklahoma State Cowboys this weekend.
Treadwell’s final three (Oklahoma Sooners, Ole Miss Rebels and Oklahoma State), have been the leaders for some time now, and many are waiting to see who finally comes out on top.
If I had to speculate, I’d say the Sooners have the smallest chance of landing the top receiver from Crete, Illinois. Much like fellow mega-recruit Robert Nkemdiche, Treadwell’s mother will play a huge role in the decision-making process. Treadwell’s mom wasn’t along for the Oklahoma visit last month, inspiring some analysts to speculate the Sooners are probably out of the running entirely.
Good news for Cowboys fans, Treadwell’s mother will be along for the ride this weekend.
Of course, his mother was also in attendance for the visit to Ole Miss as well, where she fell in love with coach Hugh Freeze, the Grove, the Square, and everything else about William Faulkner’s beloved Oxford, Mississippi. After that visit, Ole Miss was clearly the team to beat.
Also helping Ole Miss’s chances is the fact that Treadwell was in attendance for their bowl game on January 5th, witnessing the Rebels destroy the Pitt Panthers 38-17.
So all in all, I’d say it’s going to come down to Oklahoma State and Ole Miss. The last time these two teams were in a dead heat battle for a receiver was in 2007, when they fought it out for Dez Bryant. Oklahoma State obviously came out on top in that one.
Will Ole Miss finally get their star wideout?
We’ll know on January 17th.
