When uncommitted prospect Ivan Rabb‘s No. 8 ranked Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland) team won the California state title against No. 10 ranked Mater Dei (Santa Ana) behind his efforts, it was assumed that he would immediately commit to the California Golden Bears. This did not end up happening.
The 65-64 win in overtime ended with a strange play. Rabb got fouled with less than a second left and hit one out of two free throws; he missed the rim completely on his first attempt. It was O’Dowd’s first California state title since 1981, but the Bears were not lucky enough to hear any good news afterwards. Rabb finished with 19 points and 21 rebounds.
“I was planning on making it today, but I’m not sure right now,” he said about his impending choice to the San Francisco Chronicle. “I don’t want to rush into a decision. I think it’s coming very soon, though. I’m very heavily considering [California] for sure, without a doubt. I want to make that clear. I still want to talk with my family, make the right choice.”
My guess is that Rabb is now leaning towards the Arizona Wildcats. Head coach Sean Miller has proven himself as a great leader and recruiter, and Stanley Johnson‘s success at Arizona showed how a freshman can have an impact in that system. Rabb is playing in the McDonald’s All-American game on Wednesday night. He should look just as impressive against the nation’s best players, and you will not regret checking out the game and watching the power forward do his thing.
Will the nation’s top-rated player, Ben Simmons, grab MVP honors? It is possible, but do not count out the West winning the exhibition on some late free throws by Rabb.
