A high school football player from Alto High School in Texas died on Saturday after injuries he suffered during his team’s game on Friday night.
Junior Cam’ron Matthews reportedly told teammates that he felt dizzy in the huddle at one point, but there aren’t a whole lot of other details involving the specifics of his injury. The hospital has yet to release a cause of death for Matthews.
Kerry Birdwell, a superintendent from Alto, had this to say about Matthews (via abcnews.go.com):
“When you have your own kids and you want them to emulate someone and follow in their footsteps, Cam’ron was a perfect example of that. He was a great kid in the classroom, unbelievable athlete, but more importantly just a great, great kid.”
Since 2005, 36 high school football players have died from on-field injuries. That number seems to be on the rise as Matthews’ passing pushes the number to six on-field deaths just since September.
While the NFL will tell you that the sport of football has never been safer, the number of deaths and serious injuries seems to tell a different story. Parents will really have to begin evaluating whether it’s worth allowing their kids to play a sport that has caused so many catastrophic injuries.
Personally, I played one season of high school football and suffered multiple concussions that ended my career. I’m crossing my fingers that my son is an all-world baseball or basketball player.
