If names like Sami Zayn and Adrian Neville are not familiar to you, the next step you make should be to watch an episode of NXT on the WWE Network. NXT is WWE‘s developmental program and proves that the future of professional wrestling is looking bright. With a weekly program that features one hour of pure wrestling, I think that NXT is actually better than the current RAW product that is being delivered on Monday nights.
With Triple H running as the driving force behind NXT, you can bet that it is entertaining. Unlike RAW, NXT does not waste any time with storylines that the people do not care about, such as the current feud between the Bella Twins. I feel NXT will be a staple in WWE for a long time coming and will continue to attract talent for years to come.
Many of its current superstars have already started to lay the foundation for WWE stardom. Zayn is an excellent example of this. After gaining popularity as El Generico in Ring of Honor, Zayn signed with WWE and is currently one of the fan favorites as he shines at NXT week in and week out. Upon viewing one of his matches, it became clear that Zayn possess the perfect mix of athletic ability and charisma needed to be a star in WWE. He has future champion written all over him.
Another superstar I think is destined for greatness is ‘the man that gravity forgot’, Adrian Neville. Neville began making a name for himself across the indie wrestling scene wrestling for Ring of Honor, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and Chikara under the name Pac. After watching one of Neville’s matches, I was left speechless as he hit his finisher, the ‘red arrow’ (a corkscrew shooting star press), on his opponent. He hasn’t even made his WWE debut and is already the most gifted high flyer on the roster. Every match that features Neville is must watch. This guy simply has the ‘it’ factor to him and is destined for greatness.
Aside from individual superstars, NXT has some of the best tag team action out there today, something I feel WWE does a very poor job at giving its fans. Outside of the Usos, Rybaxel and the team of GoldDust and Stardust, currently WWE has a very weak tag team division. Remember the early 2000s when we were presented with tag matches galore with teams such as the Dudleys and Edge & Christian, just to name a few? Well you’re in luck, because NXT has a phenomenal tag division.
The roster is headlined by the current tag team champions, Sin Cara and Kalisto, who recently started calling themselves the Lucha Dragons. These two will be responsible for the revival of the lucha style of wresting in WWE. While Sin Cara’s initial WWE run was nothing to brag about, his current NXT run has him showing massive improvement. As for Kalisto, he possesses the ability Rey Mysterio once had before age and injury caught up to him. Kalisto makes his matches very fun and enjoyable to watch with his execution of lucha wrestling.
There is also Konnor and Viktor, better known as the Ascension. These two powerhouses have had their way with every tag team in NXT and will certainly have an immediate impact once they make their WWE debut. All WWE tag teams should be very worried about these guys. Then we have Enzo Amore and Collin Cassidy, my personal favorites. These two are the most colorful team the WWE has seen in a while. Equipped with their signature catchphrase ‘SAWFT’, they will be making quite a splash when they make it to the big time.
For all the WWE doubters and for those who think their future will be bleak, NXT is here to say “The future is NOW!” and it is looking brighter than ever. NXT has become must-see television every week and really should start to get the appreciation that it deserves. There is no need to wonder about the future of professional wrestling when you can watch it now and see what you have been missing out on.
