In the latest news surrounding the pettiness of Vince McMahon, not only is CM Punk merchandise not allowed at any WWE shows (wearing a Punk shirt or bringing a sign with his name emblazoned on it can get you kicked out or at least harassed by security) but the 434 day reign as WWE Champion is now endangered as being the longest in modern history.
Everyone knows that when you hurt Vince McMahon, there is a period of time in which he grieves and tries to erase you from history. Eventually, he gets over it and opens his arms wide open for you again, such as when he made a completely not ready Randy Orton the youngest World Champion of all time because Brock Lesnar broke his heart. Stone Cold Steve Austin walked out (which cost us a chance to see what was sure to be a great feud with Eddie Guerrero) in 2002 and The Rock got to make a boatload of snide remarks about him taking his ball and going home.
Brock is now getting paid about $16 million per suplex (give or take) and Steve Austin has come back a hundred times and continues to be treated like more of a god with every return appearance. So this leaves us with CM Punk. If he strikes gold and is actually able to achieve success and a legitimate new career as a mixed martial artist, Mr. McMahon will be knocking down his door to offer him a few bucks to mosey his way back into town. Whether or not Punk would take it is another story entirely, but that is a different column for a different day in a different year.
Now the task moves to trying to figure out who gets to break the record and move into the annals of WWE history. If the intention is to do it sooner rather than later, conventional wisdom says that the man slated to be the next World Champ will be the guy to do it. Sure, it’s possible that WWE might be getting cold feet regarding pulling the trigger on Roman Reigns, but let’s say they don’t. Roman Reigns defeats Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania and wins the title; would people really be able to handle WWE Champion Roman Reigns until July of 2016? That’s a really long time. Could Reigns handle that? I guess he could turn heel somewhere in the midst of the 15 months and it could reinvigorate him and the fans.
Of course, I could be completely jumping the gun on this entire situation. It is certainly possible that many people, myself included, are underestimating Roman’s ability to step up to the challenge. I am always thrilled to be proven wrong, especially when it comes to the chance to see something new succeed. As tends to generally be the case when it comes to speculation, time, as they say, will tell.
