For the past few years, AJ Lee has reigned over the WWE as its top diva, but a new woman challenged for that distinction in 2014. British upstart Paige debuted in dramatic fashion, and went on to have an incredibly impressive rookie campaign. As a result, she earns the distinction for being the 2014 WWE Diva of the Year.
Paige made her first appearance on WWE television the night after WrestleMania, when she shockingly ended the 295-day WWE Divas Championship reign of AJ. Over the next few months, she established herself at the class of the division as she bested an array of challengers. In the process, she displayed an incredible arsenal of moves unparalleled among current divas.
At the end of June, AJ returned to television and recaptured the title from Paige, setting the stage for perhaps the best divas feud in more than a decade. Their “frienemies” storyline ultimately led to Paige turning into a villain, a role that perfectly suits her devilish personality. In August at SummerSlam, the WWE’s second-biggest event of the year, Paige again won the championship. She ultimately lost the title to AJ approximately a month later, and eventually she fell out of the title picture.
Although she’s not been in as many prominent matches over the past few months, Paige has still delivered in the ring, and is quickly becoming the most entertaining diva on the roster based on her personality.
Paige and AJ battled neck and neck for the top spot in 2014, and although both are deserving, Paige’s presence seemed to spark the divas division as a whole. AJ was already a star prior to this year, but Paige certainly brought out the best in her. While Paige’s charisma and verbal abilities continue to improve on a weekly basis, she’s already the standard-bearer in the division for her ability in the squared circle.
Only 22, Paige will continue to grow both inside and outside of the ring. As a new addition to ‘Total Divas,’ her personality will become more evident to the WWE Universe. She could eventually become one of the top divas in WWE history, and her incredible performance in 2014 will serve as the launching pad.
