Word has surfaced recently that none other than the boss himself, Vince McMahon, had been penning, word for word, everything that has been coming out of Roman Reigns‘ mouth. This includes the absurdly atrocious stream of consciousness style promo he cut on Seth Rollins this week on the final edition of Friday Night Smackdown. He sounded like John Cena if “The Man Who Runs The Place” was overly awkward and was a black hole of charisma. Cena is not, but one Mister Roman Reigns is.
It’s bad enough that whatever he did while out injured was of no help whatsoever in the realm of acting, but the oft-reported out of touch Vince McMahon writing scripts, including the phrase “sufferin’ succotash,” certainly isn’t helping. His delivery on Smackdown was embarrassing. It was rambling, he mumbled and generally appeared uncomfortable — and then he stopped to wink at the camera as if his use of alliteration was a spectacular feat that needed to be acknowledged. It was cringe-inducing.
What we should be getting is the end of his promo and nothing else. Make an angry face, say you’re going to kick Rollins’ ass and then do it. Period. Instead, he comes off completely silly, and it’s going to make the crowd respond to him less than they currently are. It’s beginning to wane, but with The Authority now officially targeting him, the expectation is likely that the crowd will back anybody against Triple H, Stephanie McMahon and the gang. For Roman’s sake, I hope that’s the case, but at the same time I also hope, for Roman’s sake, that it doesn’t work so they can change their game plan and not make the fans despise him.
One thing continues to be certain. Vince McMahon is still out of touch and should be very far away from the creative side of the business. Can they make a Roman Reigns push work right now? Yeah, I’m sure they could. Will it work with Vince McMahon taking the helm? That’s not likely. This could get ugly, kids.
