At the end of last week’s episode of Monday Night RAW, the Chairman of the Board Vince McMahon announced that Sheamus would be getting his rematch for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on the first RAW of 2016. That alone not being enough, he added the bonus that he would be the special guest referee for the contest. Indeed, 2016 will be starting with a continuation of the most tiresome trope in professional wrestling: the boss-versus-employee storyline.
This current story barely makes any sense at all. Stone Cold Steve Austin was the antithesis of everything Vince McMahon was and wanted his company to be. That upset the owner so he tried to change Austin’s attitude and look. Austin railed against that and eventually won McMahon’s top title, and the war raged on.
On the other hand, Triple H hates Roman Reigns because he’s a bad guy. That’s it. Triple H is the evil boss and Roman Reigns is poised to be the top good guy so they apparently have to fight. If Triple H and Stephanie McMahon weren’t already targeting Reigns before the leader of the Roman Empire turned Triple H down on his offer to move over to the dark side leading up to Survivor Series, it would be fine. There would be a completely logical reason for Triple H, his wife and his father in law to go after him at that point.
With the lone difference that Roman Reigns beats up the bad guys and Triple H used to beat up the good guys, Reigns essentially is Triple H. Why would he want to stop his Samoan doppelganger? Triple H had it out for Reigns long before be was a threat to Seth Rollins and the WWE Title. It’s not like he could be jealous of Reigns because The Game has proven that he can still get on the ring and duke it out with the best of them. Is it because of his issues with Reigns’ cousin The Rock? If that’s the case they have been pretty careful not to let anybody know. God forbid WWE explains motive.
There are plenty of reasons for a feud between The Authority and Roman Reigns to exist. WWE has clarified exactly none of them to be the cause of this bitter rivalry.
To another point, why would Vince McMahon get involved, and why would it be to back up the decisions of his daughter and ungrateful son in law? Before his return last month, the Chairman had not appeared since he put The Authority’s power on the line in a Survivor Series match that ended poorly for the power couple (for a few weeks).
It’s the McMahon family, and their gimmick has always hinged on them turning against each other and getting back together at breakneck speed. That would ostensibly be their out as far as an explanation goes, but boy oh boy that is just lazy and played out.
