Ever since WWE decided to scrap the amazing story they had when Dolph Ziggler was able to survive The Authority and take them out of power, it’s been clear that he was dead in the water. I don’t know what happened, but instead of taking the chance to create a new star who was essentially a guaranteed success, he was sacrificed to make John Cena the hero and ultimately the WrestleMania match that should have gone to Ziggler went to Sting. At this point to complain about it would be akin to whining about sour grapes, but it pinpoints the exact time frame that WWE officially decided that Ziggler was never going to move to the next level.
DZ seems to have come to terms with that, which is why he has his outside endeavors, and it seems like a lot of fans, myself included, understand that he’s likely going to spend the rest of his WWE career wrestling newcomers like Baron Corbin and making the stars like Seth Rollins look good in hard-fought, entertaining matches. Sure, he’ll win here and there, but Ziggler now exists as an entity employed for the sole purpose of having good matches and counting the lights.
That really isn’t a change from what he has been doing for the majority of the last few years outside of a few shining moments, but it’s more important now. He is going to get drafted to Smackdown, where he will be part of a smaller pool of talent than he is right now. NXT call-ups will almost certainly populate a decent portion of the show in order to create some extra buzz for the new live Tuesday night edition and they will be blessed with the gift of Ziggler (drink it in…) to lay down for them and to make them look good in the ring.
Ziggler is in a position somewhat similar to Chris Jericho, albeit on a lower-lying plane. Jericho for years has been known to be “bulletproof”, essentially being able to continue being perpetually over with the fans and getting a reaction no matter how poorly he’s treated or whatever stupid things he has to do. He always gets a reaction, and it’s believable for him to get defeated by a guy like Zack Ryder on a random episode of Smackdown or to win a big-time WrestleMania match against AJ Styles, or even potentially win the WWE Championship.
Ziggler isn’t positioned in a position that he is held in such high regard by WWE like Jericho is these days, but the crowd is behind him and it wouldn’t feel out of place for him to suddenly secure a few big wins and become World Champion, even if for just a short time, with very little time between a loss to a loser and winning the big match. It’s a weird anomaly and not likely to happen, but Ziggler’s presence on the new Smackdown will be important nonetheless.
