The Seattle Seahawks have been the most active team in the NFL in drafting, trading for and claiming players this off season but are they interested now in acquiring Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart? Matt Leinart is rumored now to be on the trading block and ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that three team have contacted the Arizona Cardinals about acquiring him. The teams which are rumored to be interested are the New York Giants, Buffalo Bills and the Oakland Raiders. I can understand the Giants, since they just had to place their back-up, Jim Sorgi on the injured reserve list. The Buffalo Bills and the Oakland Raider, I’m thinking a move to one of those two teams might be a stretch. So are the Seattle Seahawks interested?
It would make the most logical move since Matt Leinart would be reunited with his college coach, Pete Carroll. If anyone in the league to get the potential out of Leinart, it would be Carroll. Leinart won a Heisman Trophy and the National Championship with Carroll.
But does the move make any sense for the Seahawks? Matt Hasselbeck will be the starter this season for Seattle. Charlie Whitehurst is waiting in the wings after the Seahawks traded for him this off season from the San Diego Chargers. The Seahawks also have veteran journeyman J.P. Losman and rookie Mike Teel on their roster. Both Losman and Teel would most likely have to be cut in order for Seattle to add him to the roster.
The largest obstacle though would most likely be Leinart’s contract which pays him an obscene amount of money next year. If Leinart won’t agree to a restructured deal which any team, he might find himself simply being released by the Cardinals because no team will pay him over 9 million to sit on the bench.
Pete Carroll hasn’t spoken about Leinart, but if the Cardinals simply release him and his former coach makes no move for the former Trojan signal caller, Carroll’s silence will have spoken volumes as to whether he believes he will succeed in the NFL.
