Three NFL teams are facing possible quarterback controversies, the Tennessee Titans, the Oakland Raiders and of course, the Philadelphia Eagles. The Tennessee Titans and the Oakland Raiders pulled their starters yesterday in attempts to win while Michael Vick was starting in place of Kevin Kolb as he was recovering from a concussion suffered in week 1 against the Green Bay Packers. So which team faces an actual controversy?
The Tennessee Titans offense ran into a buzz saw of a Pittsburgh Steelers defense yesterday. The Steelers forced 7 turnovers and chased Vince Young out of the game. Vince Young was highly ineffective against the Steelers, throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble. So before inflicting more damage to Young’s psyche, Titans head coach Jeff Fisher decided to replace him with veteran journeyman Kerry Collins. Collins, 37, is an experienced backup and a game manager style quarterback. Collins always seems to do very well off the bench, it’s when he’s the starting quarterback is when he runs into problems. Vince Young showed some development last season and he and RB Chris Johnson seem to feed off each other. Yesterday was one of those days where nothing much was happening for Young, so fall back, regroup and see what happens next week versus the New York Giants. Collins should not be the starter.
The Oakland Raiders decided at halftime that they would replace starter Jason Campbell with Bruce Gradkowski in the third quarter. The fans in Oakland cheered as Gradkowski came on to the field, he’s become quite a fan favorite in Oakland. Gradkowski did manage to jump start the Raider offense, leading them to 13 points in the second half. I was a proponent of the Raiders acquiring Jason Campbell, I thought he was a good fit for the Raiders offense. However, while he was with the Washington Redskins, there was a constant revolving door of offensive coordinators and head coaches, and now in Oakland he’s having to learn another system entirely. Bruce Gradkowski has been with the Raiders team and understands the offense, he seems to ignite the offense. I say that Jason Campbell should get the start this week against the Arizona Cardinals, but make sure Gradkowski is ready to come in as a relief pitcher.
The Philadelphia Eagles situation is a different kind of quarterback situation. Kevin Kolb has been replaced by Michael Vick for 6 quarters of play due to injury. Both Vick and Eagles head coach Andy Reid have both said that Kevin Kolb will be the quarterback this coming Sunday when the Eagles play the Jacksonville Jaguars. Once the Eagles moved Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins this past offseason, the Eagles immediately gave Kevin Kolb a new contract, despite him only starting three games for the Eagles in his career. Everything appeared ready for him to assume the role of starting quarterback. But a funny thing happened on his way to the huddle, he was ineffective. He was ineffective this preseason and prior to him being knocked out of the game against the Green Bay Packers, he was not moving the Eagles offense at all. Enter Michael Vick who is moving the Philadelphia offense at will and now you have a full blown controversy. I think that Kolb will get the start against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he gets a very short leash. If he gets yanked in the Jaguars game, name Vick the starter until anything further develops.
