AzCentral.com is reporting this morning that the Arizona Cardinals must improve their quarterback situation if they have any hope of retaining WR Larry Fitzgerald long term. The site reports that Fitzgerald has met the minimal performance standards of his contract and that the team hopes to sign him to a new deal this coming spring. Fitzgerald has made it known in Arizona that he wants the ball and he’s simply not getting it this season.
The Arizona Cardinals quarterback situation is precarious at best. Derek Anderson has not played well at all and was benched last week in favor of rookie Max Hall. Hall showed promise in the preseason but he is after all, a rookie. Will Fitzgerald be content to go through the growing pains of a rookie quarterback when he will be 29 in 2012?
According to the report, Fitzgerald’s contract has a clause which prohibits the Cardinals from placing the franchise tag on him or from trading him. At the conclusion of this season, Fitzgerald will likely know what the quarterback situation is going to be in Arizona in 2011. If there is little improvement in Hall’s production, and the Cardinals look not to be active in acquiring a veteran quarterback, could Fitzgerald waive the no-trade clause in his contract if a suitable destination for Fitzgerald is found?
The Cardinals would be wise to trade Fitzgerald before the start of the 2011 season and get something of value in return knowing that he will walk after the season as a free agent and be left empty handed.
