Report: Dolphins Owner Contacted Bill Cowher’s Agent About Coaching Team Next Season
Earlier this week, reports indicated that Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was showing high interest in Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden coming on board to coach the team in 2012. Now, it appears Ross is getting a head start on the process after reaching out to Cowher’s agent.
According to NFL Network Reporter Albert Breer, Ross has been in contact with Cowher’s agent about becoming the head coach for the Dolphins next season. Cowher retired from coaching after the 2006 season and has currently works as an NFL analyst on CBS, but he’s expressed interest in returning to the sidelines next season.
Of course, nothing is set in stone for Cowher and what happens in Miami over the next few weeks could play a huge factor with where the former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach ends up. As Breer points out, Cowher will only join a team with a head coaching vacancy and all signs point to Tony Sparano receiving the axe in the middle of the 2011 season after an 0-6 start–which means things could get complicated for the team depending on who would take over as the interim head coach if this happens.
Either way, the fact that Ross is already getting in touch with candidates for the head coaching job next season is a bad sign for Sparano. Then again, if Dolphins fans had their choice between the two head coaches, there’s no question Cowher would be the obvious choice over Sparano 10 times out of 10–so it’s good to see Ross at least thinking about the future in the middle of the season.
