Don’t Be Surprised If Dallas Cowboys Claim Donovan McNabb Off Waivers
Imagine being a Philadelphia Eagles fan and hearing this news–the Dallas Cowboys have claimed quarterback Donovan McNabb off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings.
Come Friday, this may actually end up being true now that the Vikings have decided to place the veteran quarterback on waivers after their experiment for the 2011 season failed to work out. Just like they did with Brett Favre the previous two years, Minnesota acquired McNabb from the Washington Redskins prior to the start of the regular season with the hope he would be the short-term answer at quarterback to give rookie Christian Ponder a year to develop and learn the system.
Obviously, that plan backfired as McNabb was benched after a 1-5 start and could be joining a new team on Friday. Both the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears expressed interest in Kyle Orton–who was waived by the Denver Broncos last week–before he was snagged up by the Kansas City Chiefs to provide depth at quarterback and now that McNabb is available, many believe one of these two teams will consider bringing No. 5 on board for the rest of the season.
While the Bears are weighing out all of their options now that Jay Cutler could miss the remainder of the season and there’s still plenty of questions left to be answered with Caleb Hanie, the Cowboys are looking for depth beyond Tony Romo in case something happens over the next few weeks. At 8-4, Dallas is riding an impressive four-game winning and considered one of the hottest teams in football right now, but if something were to happen to No. 9, there’s no way this team would be as dangerous as they are right now.
What makes the Cowboys situation even more difficult is Jon Kitna is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a back injury–so they clearly need some help at the quarterback position. Dallas would have a shot to claim McNabb (21st) off waivers before Chicago (24th) and it’s safe to say Jerry Jones wouldn’t mind paying the remaining $1.6 million on the veteran’s current deal for the rest of the season.
If you thought fans in the City of Brotherly Love hated McNabb before–just imagine what their feelings will be like if he ends up joining the Cowboys for the rest of the season.
