Despite All Odds, Giants’ Linebacker, Mark Herzlich, Living His Super Bowl Dream
Yesterday, a Tweet from New York Giants’ Linebacker, Mark Herzlich, reminded us that there is more to life than just football.
Nearly three years ago, on May 14, 2009, Herzlich, an All-American linebacker from Boston College, was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.
He was told by doctors that there was a strong possibility that he would never walk again. The hopes of him playing football were obviously dim.
However, Herzlich wasn’t ready to accept his diagnosis, and after a strenuous 4 month battle with the disease, he announced that he was cancer free on EPSN’s College Gameday and returned to the field for the Eagles during his senior year in college.
After going undrafted in the 2011 NFL draft, he was drafted by the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL. Not ready to give up his dream, he decided to wait it out and see if there were any NFL teams interested in signing him as a free agent.
In July, he was picked up by the New York Giants, eventually earning a spot on their final roster.
Herzlich would prove to be a great pick up for New York, as the linebacker played in 11 games for the Giants this season, including his first career start on Nov. 20 before he was sidelined with an ankle injury in week 12. Though he also missed the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco Forty-Niners, he says that he is fine and ready to play.
Yesterday, as the Giants stepped off the plane in Indianapolis to prepare for Super Bowl XLVI against the New England Patriots, the weight of the moment wasn’t lost on Herzlich as he shared the following on Twitter:
