Memphis DT Dontari Poe Is Winning the NFL Combine
University of Memphis defensive tackle Dontari Poe is a man of mammoth measurements.
Standing 6’5″ and weighing 346 pounds, Poe has turned the heads of NFL executives in the past few days at the official NFL combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Poe ran an unreal 4.87 second 40-yard dash (which included a 1.7 10-yard split) as his first, unofficial time. He also pushed 225 pounds 44 times in the bench press competition, which made him the strongest player regardless of position.
Wow.
Poe’s speed and strength numbers here are raw, and may not have a direct correlation to his success at the NFL level, but they still suggest the Memphis product could be used at several places on the defensive line– not just at tackle.
The Memphis football program is a running joke and struggles from one season to the next in Division I competition.
Dontari Poe, however, is proof that the “diamond in the rough” notion of scouting is still worth it’s weight.
Would you want a 6’5″, 346 pound DT rumbling after you in the pocket?
Nope, didn’t think so.
