What Does Tim Tebow Trade Mean For New York Jets Starting Quarterback, Mark Sanchez?
With the recent news of quarterback Tim Tebow being traded to the New York Jets, one has to question, who is the starting qb in New York? Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow?
Tebow is a national sensation and even seemed to prove why he is a capable starting qb last season. He started 11 games and ended up with a regular season record of 7-4. Now that doesn’t sound fantastic, but for a first time starter that is pretty darn good. Throughout the season, he dismantled defenses with his blazing speed but also showed that he doesn’t have the greatest arm.
Tebow led the Broncos to the playoffs and in his first career playoff game, he threw for a career high 316 yards and two touchdowns, including an 80 yard TD to Demaryius Thomas on the first play of overtime, as the Broncos won 29–23.
Interestingly enough, Tebow has a 47.3% career completion percentage, but Sanchez isn’t much better (55.3%) and actually lost to Tebow and Denver last season.
The only reason why it would seem likely that it would end up being Sanchez as starter is because, The Jets just locked up Mark Sanchez through 2016 with a three-year $40.5 million extension on March 9.
More then likely, Sanchez will get first dibs as starter but if he ends up struggling, how long will it take for the fans and owners to call for Tebow as starter.
Sanchez has never been a good quarterback when he is put under pressure. He is a fragile player who works best in a situation where he knows what is happening. With Tebow running into the locker room mix, Sanchez won’t feel safe at all. Sanchez already had his doubters on his own team this off-season. One anonymous player said when asked if the Jets should go after Peyton Manning:
“Come on. That’s a no-brainer,” one Jet said. “If you have a chance to get a healthy 36-year-old Peyton Manning and you don’t do it, then you’re stupid. If I could get a healthy Manning, then, hell yeah, I would trade Sanchez.”
Another anonymous player said:
“We have to bring in another quarterback that will make him work at practice,” one player told the Daily News. “He’s lazy and content because he knows he’s not going to be benched.”
Well, whoever that player was, he got his wish. Tebow will come in and he will change the scenery in that locker room. Between the media attention, to the fans, to his own coaches, Tebow will make a big impression and could push for the job.
Expect this to rattle Sanchez in a big way. If that does occur, look for Tebowmania to take over and have a successful wildcat offense. Don’t forget, the entire Broncos roster backed Tebow, obviously the Jets don’t feel the same with Sanchez.
