New England WR Chad Ochocinco Restructures Contract
New England Patriots wide receiver Chad Ochocinco has restructured his contract to remain on the team given its new depth at the position.
According to reports, Ochocinco’s contract with the Patriots will pay him a paltry $1 million in comparison to the $3 million he was scheduled to earn in 2012, following what many believe to be his poorest season in the NFL in 2011.
The once-dominant wideout caught only 15 passes for 276 yards and a touchdown during the Patriots’ 2011 campaign, and was a minor option for Tom Brady on an offense that includes weapons like Deion Branch, Rob Gronkowski, Anthony Hernandez and Wes Welker.
There are a couple of ways to view Ochocinco’s contract restructuring to stay with the Patriots.
In one respect, he’s smart enough to realize his best opportunity to win a Super Bowl ring lies in New England regardless of how much production he provides to the team. Were he to go the route of another former star who is past their prime, Terrell Owens, the results could be very similar.
There isn’t any greener grass on the other side when you are on the back-side of your career.
If you follow Chad Ochocinco on Twitter, you know there is more to him than meets the eye. He has a good sense of humor, interacts well with his followers, and seems to have a good overall life view, realizing there is more to life than football. No. 85 has certainly made enough money in his career, so the fact he restructured his contract to be a smaller producer on a winner rather than the opposite shouldn’t be much of a surprise.
Make no mistake, though, Ochocinco will still need to work his butt off and be a competitor during OTAs and at the start of training camp to ensure a roster spot, and prevent the Patriots from going a cheaper route.
Chad has always controlled his own destiny and made deals which secure his future.
It’s not always about money.
