No More Debate: Former New Orleans Saints Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams Deserves Life-Time Ban From NFL
Disturbing audio has emerged on the internet of former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams regarding the bounty hunting scandal before the team’s playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers last January and to be honest–it’s beyond disturbing to listen to.
As the Saints are currently trying to appeal the suspensions handed out to Sean Payton, Mickey Loomis, and Joe Vitt, it’s safe to say the audio clips that were leaked on Thursday have pretty much ruined any chance of that happening considering Williams pretty much instructed all of his players to injure members of the 49ers in some of the most brutal ways possible. Read some of the quotes from the clip below and decide whether or not Williams deserves to coach in the NFL again.
“Kill the head and the body will die.”
“We’ve got to do everything in the world to make sure we kill Frank Gore’s head. We want him running sideways. We want his head sideways.”
“We’re gonna dominate the line of scrimmage and we’re gonna kill the ****ing head.”
“Every single one of you, before you get off the pile, affect the head. Early, affect the head. Continue, touch and hit the head.”
“We need to decide on how many times we can beat Frank Gore’s head.”
These comments are not only disturbing for any coach to say to their players, but they make Williams sound crazier than some of those psychopath killers from the Scream movies. It’s one thing to motivatie your players during a pre-game or halftime speech to fire them up to perform well, but there’s no excuse for anyone to encourage players to go out and injure players in some of the worst ways possible–especially when they involve the head.
As much as we love to cheer on our beloved teams, football is just like any other sport where no player participating should have to deal with their life being at risk. For those of you defending Williams by saying football is a tough sport and the opposing players should have been able to handle these types of hits, I hope listening to these clips changes your opinion on the matter.
Otherwise, you may be just as sick in the head as Williams.
No football player should ever target an opponent’s head during a game–period. There’s absolutely no excuse for what Williams asked his players to do and it would be a disgrace for the NFL to let this animal coach in the league ever again.
Roger Goodell has done everything in his power to promote safety in the league over the years and to let a coach like Williams return to the NFL would be a disgrace on everything he’s accomplished so far. If Goodell can’t realize that after hearing these audio clips, he may be just as much of an idiot as Williams for thinking these acts would never come back and ruin his career down the road.
At this point, the debate should be over–Williams deserves a life-time ban from the NFL. And as for the members of the Saints organization facing suspension over these allegations, the punishment fits the crime for not taking a stand to put an end to it when they knew it was going on–so let’s hope the league acknowledges that when deciding whether to reduce these suspensions or let Williams coach in the league again.
