Maurice Jones-Drew Wants New Contract From Jacksonville Jaguars
There were plenty of questions surrounding why Maurice Jones-Drew was absent from the start of organized team activities for the Jacksonville Jaguars considering he’s one of the top leaders on the team. If the Jaguars didn’t know the reason before, they certainly do now.
According to Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.com, Jones-Drew wants a new contract from the organization–which shouldn’t come as a surprise considering where he ranks compared to other running backs in the NFL. As Alper points out, Jones-Drew is scheduled to make $10 million over the next two seasons, but that only makes him the eighth-best paid running back in the league.
When taking that into consideration with the fact that Jones-Drew has ranked in the top five for rushing yards in each of the last three seasons–it’s on surprise he feels like he’s being underpaid for being the team’s top weapon on offense. He led the league in rushing last season (1,606 yards to go along with eight touchdowns) and has proven to be one of the most difficult running backs to contain on the field at times due to his size–so the Jaguars may want to at least consider giving their beloved running back a new deal.
Otherwise–their offense could be in for another long season. Considering how bad the offense looked at times in 2011, one can only imagine what it would be like next season with an unhappy Jones-Drew.
