Report: Colt McCoy’s Father, Brad, Sealed His Son’s Fate With Cleveland Browns Last Season
After selecting Brandon Weeden with the 22nd pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns wasted no time contacting teams about a possible trade for Colt McCoy–who was a third-round for the team back in 2010. While this shouldn’t come as a surprise considering how much McCoy has struggled over his first two years with the Browns, it appears there’s someone else that played a big role in the team’s decision–Colt’s father Brad McCoy.
According to Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com via ProFootballTalk.com, the decision to part ways with McCoy actually dates back to last season to Week 14 when the Browns lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite suffering a concussion, the team kept McCoy in the game–which led to Colt’s dad Brad ripping the organization apart afterwards for choosing to do so.
Now, it appears the comments made about Colt by Brad are backfiring and played a big part in the team’s decision to part ways with the former Texas standout.
From Grossi’s article:
I’ve been told that McCoy’s fate as a former starter was sealed when his father sounded off about the club’s handling of his concussion in the Pittsburgh game on Dec. 8.
I was told at the time that Brad McCoy’s comments meant the end of McCoy in Cleveland, but I didn’t believe it then.
The comments did not drive the pursuit of a new quarterback, but I believe they contributed to McCoy’s demise.
I will have more to say about McCoy’s rather stunning demise at a later date.
Obviously, player safety is the most important thing in the world when it comes to the NFL and Colt’s father had every reason in the world to be frustrated with the organization after the team made a mistake by keeping him in the game. However, this is one of those situations where Brad needs to realize his son is an adult and should probably avoid getting involved as much as possible.
Colt’s a big boy and he could have easily handled this situation on his own without his father. Unfortunately for him, the Browns were Colt’s best and possibly only chance at a starting job in the NFL–so nice work on dad’s end.
