Green Bay Packers Release Safety Charlie Peprah
Christopher Hanewinckel-US PRESSWIRE

Charlie Peprah was expected to start at safety for the Green Bay Packers this coming season, but something changed that plan.  The Packers have released the veteran safety and will instead look to some of the younger guys on the team like Jerron McMillian.

The #Packers have released safety @CharliePeprah. Peprah confirms via text message. Thanks to @JHags56 for the tip.

To say this move was a shock is an understatement.  The best part about this move was how it was discovered.  Apparently Charlie Peprah told Justin Hagstrom that he was released.  Some fact checking confirmed the fan report about the release.  Strange things happen in the sports world today.

The Packers have struggled to find a safety for a long time and Peprah was decent.  Nothing more, nothing less.  However, the Packers must feel that the young guys are ready to contribute this season.  Safety is one of the few weak spots on the team so a veteran presence seemed like a good idea at the time.

If anything holds the Packers back this season, it will be their defense.  Peprah made some good plays during his time in Green Bay but also made some bad ones.  This move allows the young guys to take hold of the position and it might lead to some weird defensive formations.  The Packers love using some formations that are rarely seen so a one safety set might be a new wrinkle.

Charlie Peprah should probably catch on with a new team soon.  However, his release probably took a lot of people in the league by surprise.
