NFL Rumors: Dallas Cowboys’ Barry Church May Steal Starting Safety Spot
Dallas Cowboys training camp is not even a week old but Barry Church appears to be grabbing the starting safety spot opposite Gerald Sensabaugh. The Cowboys signed Brodney Pool in the off-season and many people expected him to be the starter at the other safety spot.
Apparently someone forgot to tell Church. Every report out of Oxnard, CA is the star of training camp so far has been Barry Church. It doesn’t hurt that Brodney Pool flunked the conditioning test and hasn’t practiced yet, but it wouldn’t change how good Church has looked.
Per ESPN’s Tim McMahon, Cowboys secondary coach Jerome Henderson had this to say about Church:
“Barry Church is a heck of a player. When I got here and saw him on film, I kept seeing him show up and make plays. We hope that he grows from last year and takes that next step and becomes a reliable starting safety for us.”
You see the quotes straight from the coaches mouth, “a reliable starting safety.” As it stands right now, the job across from Sensabaugh maybe Church’s to lose, not the other way around.
It’s too early to for the Cowboys to be naming starters, especially when head coach Jason Garrett preaches competition but the early signs on Church have been great. If Pool does not win the starting spot it seems unlikely he’ll make the final roster since releasing Pool would not cost the Cowboys very much money since he only signed a 1-year deal.
Either way, it seems as though Pool’s in the deep end.
