Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb Leaves Game Against Saints With Rib Contusion
One of the most highly anticipated quarterback battles heading into the 2012 season involves Kevin Kolb and John Skelton of the Arizona Cardinals. While Kolb was given the go-ahead for the start of Sunday’s Hall of Fame Game against the New Orleans Saints, it was Skelton who took over quickly after Kolb suffered an injury in the first quarter.

Kolb apparently suffered a rib contusion thanks to a tackle from Saints defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis. Kolb was criticized numerous times throughout the 2011 season after only appearing in nine games while dealing with injuries and suffering an injury this early in the preseason is never a good sign for a player whose job is in jeopardy.
Obviously, this injury could have been much worse considering nothing was broken, but the last thing Kolb needs is to miss out on playing time as he and Skelton appear to be neck-and-neck for the starting job at this point. Plus, Kolb also threw an interception during his first throw of the game–so he already appears to be at a disadvantage from that play as well.
On the bright side, at least Kolb will have plenty of time to recover if he is forced to miss time off the field since the start of the regular season is still a month away. However, as mentioned earlier, this has to be frustrating for Kolb considering he needs every snap he can get to prove he deserves the starting job for the Cardinals over Skelton for the 2012 season.
