Brandon Jacobs injured in preseason: Season in jeopardy
Kelley L Cox-US PRESSWIRE

San Francisco 49ers running back Brandon Jacobs was carted off the field with a significant knee injury in Saturday’s preseason game against the Houston Texans. Jacobs could not bear any weight on the knee, an immediate sign that his season could be over before it began.

Jacobs signed with the 49ers this off-season after a tumultuous separation from the New York Giants, where he played the previous seven seasons.

The injury occurred on the first play of the game after a hit by Houston’s Kareem Jackson.

At 30 years old, a significant injury could potentially end the bruising back’s career in a league that is shifting more and more towards young, multi-back systems. Jacobs has amassed 4,849 yards and 56 touchdowns in seven years in the NFL.

The 49ers already feature Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter, but Jacobs was penciled in for the goal-line duties this season. The No.3 role now shifts to rookie LaMichael James. The former Oregon back finished 3rd in voting for the Heisman Trophy this season, rushing for 1,805 yards. The 49ers selected James in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Gore now figures to receive the goal-line carries for San Francisco. Gore played in all 16 games for only the second time in seven seasons, finishing with 1,211 yards and 8 touchdowns.
