NFL rumors and Terrell Owens seem to go hand-in-hand, even when the wide receiver isn’t playing in the NFL. However, after an awful showing in his first preseason action this past Saturday where he went without a single catch despite being targeted five times, Owens, 38, might find himself on the hot seat.
Let’s be honest, who really thought that the Seattle Seahawks were making a good move when they signed the much maligned but talented wide receiver? Not many people outside the Seahawks organization that’s for sure. Owens hasn’t played a down of professional football since suiting up for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2010. He was somewhat productive, at least when you look at his numbers, 72 catches for 983 yards and 9 TDs. However, that is on paper and although he showed flashes of being an elite receiver it was clear he was missing something. The drops were never far behind Owens.
Owens even had trouble sticking in the Indoor Football League. Yes, he was cut by the Allen Wranglers, a team he partially owned, as well as his partial ownership. The Seahawks really thought he would be NFL-ready? Okay, he wasn’t terrible in the Indoor Football League, posting 420 yards receiving and 10 TDs in eight starts but obviously something went wrong. Perhaps Owens’ attitude had something to do with his release.
I can’t really blame the Seahawks for trying to see if something was left in the tank of the NFL’s second all-time yardage leader. But the 15-year veteran and 6-time Pro Bowler has been a clubhouse cancer throughout his career. The Seahawks have an unstable quarterback situation with Matt Flynn and Russell Wilson fighting for the starting job so it might not have been a good idea to bring him around two quarterback trying to find their way in the NFL. Afterall, who can forget Owens’ tearful television interview where he proclaims “that’s my quarterback,” in reference to Tony Romo, a quarterback that grew tired of Owens’ attitude on and off the field.
Well, at least the Seahawks are finding out early on that Owens has nothing left in the tank and can cut him soon before he does any real damage to Wilson or Flynn.
