Every year in the NFL, you have teams making cuts that either surprise you or you have to do a double take because the player has been on that particular team forever and you never thought they would get released. This story is definitely the latter. After eight years with the Washington Redskins, Chris Cooley will be looking for work elsewhere. The team allowed Cooley to release the news in a press conference today.
“The Washington Redskins are releasing me today,” Cooley said. “This will be my last day as a Redskin. I’m very fortunate to have played for a team and a fan base that have embraced me like they have. This team changed my life. I have every belief that I can still play football at a high level. I’ll take some time….not sure I could wear another jersey.”
Cooley was going to backup Fred Davis this year and had also been playing fullback during training camp. The release gives him an opportunity to catch on somewhere else and compete for the starting role, though I’m not sure if he will get that opportunity this close to the season.
This is certainly a good era for tight ends, and there are not many teams who could be in need of a tight end. The Houston Texans, Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles come to mind as possible destinations, but even those teams have starters that they like.
It could be the end of the road for Cooley, and it has been a good run if he decides to call it quits.
