San Antonio Spurs Drop Diogu, Add Thomas
The San Antonio Spurs have dropped forward Ike Diogu, a fifth year player from Arizona State who was a lottery draft pick by the Golden State Warriors. The Spurs signed him earlier this season, and after not playing hardly at all this season, coach Greg Popovich decided to go in a different direction.
That direction was to Malcolm Thomas who was a teammate of Kawhi Leonard at San Diego State last season. Thomas averaged just over eleven points and eight rebounds per game last season as a member of the Aztecs. Thomas was less an offensive force than he was a defensive stopper.
With only Tim Duncan, Matt Bonner, Tiago Splitter, and DeJuan Blair in the front court, Popovich is trying to get some bigger bodies in there. This is odd, however, as ESPN.com has Diogu listed as twenty-five pounds heavier than Thomas, while both are listed at 6’9″.
Unfortunately, I do not believe San Antonio’s lack of front court depth can be helped adequately by free agent and D-League signings. What the Spurs need is a trade. For whom? That’s not up to me to decide, but they need a defensive presence like Tyson Chandler. Timmy is accepting a lesser role on this team, and he just is not as fast or agile as he once was.
Let’s hope this can provide some depth for the time being.
