Malcom Floyd could be an x factor for the San Diego Chargers in 2012
The presence of Malcom Floyd could be huge for the San Diego Chargers in the 2012 NFL season. In 11 games played during the 2010 season, Floyd was second on San Diego’s roster with 717 receiving yards, second on the team with six touchdown receptions, second in receiving yards per game with 65.2 and third in receptions with 37. Floyd missed four games during the 2011 season, but led the NFL in yards per reception, led the team in receiving yards per game, was second in total receiving yards on the Chargers and third on San Diego in TD receptions.
I am sure that Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson opened up the field for Floyd at times, but Jackson missed 11 games in 2010 and Gates missed six games that season. This was the year in which Floyd had his career high in TD receptions for a season. There will be some added pressure on Floyd with the loss of Jackson, but the addition of Robert Meachem should help. Also, Mike Tolbert led the team with 735 rushing yards in 2010 when Floyd set his career high in TD receptions. Ryan Mathews finished 2011 with 1,091 rushing yards, so he should be as or more productive in 2012 which will take pressure away from San Diego’s receivers.
Floyd was on pace for 53 receptions, 1,043 receiving yards and nine TDs if he played a full season in 2010. Floyd was on pace for 57 receptions, 1,141 receiving yards and seven TDs if he played a full season in 2011. The San Diego Chargers need Floyd for close to all 16 games in 2012 because he could maximize his production for the team.
