Should San Diego Chargers Move Jammer to Safety?

Quentin Jammer has been a steady force at corner for the San Diego Chargers for the past 10 years.  At the start of the 2012 season he will be 33 years of age.  Undeniably this will result in a decline in his play sooner than later.  While his play has yet to drop off, why not toy with the idea of moving him to strong safety while he still has some tread left on his tires?

At 6-0 205 Jammer has good size and has been a solid tackler throughout his career.  These are skills the Chargers could definitely  use at strong safety seeing as how they’ve been looking to fill that position since Rodney Harrison left the team.  Jammer is a physical player, not a finesse corner like a Champ Bailey or a Deion Sanders, he’s more of a Darrelle Revis type.  Although this past year there were numerous plays where he was flat out beat.

As a strong safety he would not be as dependant on his speed as he would his instincts, something which he is not lacking.  While the chargers have up and coming Darrell Stuckey on the roster, Jammer would be a very nice fill in for a season or two while Stuckey gets more comfortable in the Chargers’ scheme.  This also will give the San Diego the opportunity to bring in a new cornerback via the draft.  With a fairly solid draft class ranging from Morris Claiborne to Janoris Jenkins, along with young Chargers Marcus Gilchrist and Shareece Wright there are numerous options to take over at corner.
