Will Norv Turner be fired during the 2012 season?
The San Diego Chargers‘ organization decided to bring back Norv Turner for his sixth season as head coach of the team. San Diego has not made the playoffs since the 2009 NFL season when they lost their only playoff game after finishing the regular season with a 13-3 record. The Chargers have not won a playoff game since the 2008 season when they defeated the Indianapolis Colts in overtime.
San Diego ran into brick walls at some point the last two seasons. San Diego started the 2010 season with a 2-5 record, won four games in a row, lost a game and finished the season 3-1 in their last four games which gave them a 9-7 overall record. The Kansas City Chiefs won the AFC West with a 10-6 record and had a worse record than San Diego within the division because San Diego was 3-3 while Kansas City was 2-4. The Chargers started off on fire in 2011 with a 4-1 record. They would go on to lose six straight games before finishing the season 4-1 in their last five games. The Denver Broncos won the division with an 8-8 record. The Chargers also finished at 8-8, but lost due to Denver having a better record against common opponents.
The Lightning Bolts also ran into a brick wall during the 2008 season when they started 4-8, but finished the season with an 8-8 record and a division title due to Denver giving up a three game lead after they started 7-5. They were able to make up ground in 2008, but 2010 and 2011 proved that this is not a way to have consistent success. If San Diego has a dreadful stretch like this in 2012, Turner could be out.
