Philip Rivers will deserve to be a Pro Bowler in 2012
Philip Rivers finished his 2011 season with the San Diego Chargers ranked sixth among NFL quarterbacks with 4,624 passing yards, was seventh in completion percentage, eighth in touchdown passes with 27 and eight in yards per attempt. These were all positives for Rivers, but he was tied for the third in interceptions with Rex Grossman. Rivers made the Pro Bowl last season despite his 20 interceptions, but this may have been an example of justice served due to him being snubbed in the 2008 season. He led the NFL in TD passes with 34, led the NFL in yards per attempt, had the best QB rating and finished fifth in passing yards while only throwing 11 INTs in 2008.
Rivers deservedly made the Pro Bowl in 2006, 2009 and 2010. He finished the 2006 season with 3,388 passing yards, 22 TDs and nine INTs. Rivers had 4,254 passing yards, 28 TDs and nine INTs in 2009 and led the NFL in passing yards with 4,710, had 30 TDs and 13 INTs during the 2010 season. Rivers also led the NFL in yards per pass attempt from 2008-2010, while he and his predecessor Drew Brees are the only QBs to throw for at least 4,000 yards from 2008-2011.
San Diego claimed left tackle Jared Gaither off waivers on November 30, 2011 after the Kansas City Chiefs placed him on it and Rivers finished the last five games of his 2011 season with 11 TDs and only three INTs after 16 TDs and 17 INTs the first 11 games. Rivers will cut down on his interceptions in 2012 and continue his pace of at least 25 TD passes like he did from 2008-2011. I expect this to happen because Rivers never had a full season with fewer than 20 TD passes and last season was the first time he had more than 15 interceptions.
