San Diego Chargers Quarterback Philip Rivers Will Not Talk About Too Many Interceptions in 2012
San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers finished the 2011 NFL season ranked sixth among all quarterbacks with 4,624 passing yards, seventh in completion percentage at 62.9, eighth in touchdown passes with 27, and 11th in QB rating.
While Rivers put together another great season in terms of positives, his 20 interceptions were tied with Rex Grossman for third among all quarterbacks. There were offensive line problems for San Diego with injuries to left guard Kris Dielman and left tackle Marcus McNeill. Rivers threw 15 touchdowns and 17 interceptions through his first 10 games, but 12 touchdowns and only three interceptions in his last six.
San Diego picked up left tackle Jared Gaither off waivers, and the line protected Rivers better as a whole because he was sacked 28 times in the team’s first 11 games, but was sacked just two times in five games after Gaither was picked up. Rivers said that he made some poor throws last year, but has to keep his aggressive attitude.
Rivers’ 2011 season included a game against the Green Bay Packers in which he had season highs in passing yards with 385, touchdowns with four and interceptions with three.
Rivers’ worst game last season was against the New York Jets when he completed 50 percent of his passes for 179 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions to go along with a 51.4 QB rating. Rivers’ best game in 2011 was against the Jacksonville Jaguars when he completed 79 percent of his passes for 294 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and a season high 146.1 QB rating.
Rivers’ interceptions have increased every year since the 2009 season, but he only had nine that year, so it is very difficult to repeat that success. Rivers started in every game for the Chargers from 2006-2010 and did not have more than 15 interceptions in any of those seasons.
I expect Rivers to return to form in 2012 for the Lightning Bolts.
