Seattle Mariners Mike Carp Makes T-Shirts To Remember Greg Halman
SEATTLE — As the Mariners embark on new beginnings with the start of spring training in Peoria, it also brings a time to remember Greg Halman. Halman, 24, was just beginning his major league career at the end of last season with tremendous potential heading into this season.
Tragically, Halman wouldn’t get the chance to prove his potential. The 24-year-old was stabbed to death by his brother in his native land of Netherlands on November 21, 2010. Growing up in the Mariners organization after being signed at 16-years-old, Halman’s death brought heartbreak and sadness over the organization.
Outfielder Mike Carp, a close friend of Halman’s, wanted to pay tribute to his friend by making t-shirts with Halman’s name and No.56 on the back. Bright orange to reflect the color of his homeland and a powerful quote from Jackie Robinson “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”
On the front of the shirt is logo of a Great Dane and “Broer voor het leven,” which means “Brother for life.”
“It’s just a reminder to not take life for granted,” Carp said. “Value it. Appreciate it. It’s just something guys can have in their lockers all year and keep him with us.”
Carp and Halman first met in 2010 when they were teammates of the Mariners triple A affiliate Tacoma Rainiers. To say the two were best friends would be an understatement. After his passing Carp stayed in contact with Halman’s parents and made a permanent commitment to Halman.
He flew to Holland to get a tattoo, the exact same one Halman had. A baseball surrounding both Europe and North America. The words “My world” going across the middle to reflect Halman’s birth home and his second home of the U.S. Carp has two stars on the tattoo that Halman didn’t have. One in Amsterdam and one in Seattle.
Carp said of his tattoo “He’ll be with me for the rest of my life.”
Heading into spring training with heavy hearts and his best friend always by his side, Carp and the Seattle Mariners are ready to get started.

I definitely remember Halman. My 11 year old son and I watched him play several games last season, and he was d*mn good! We were so excited about his potential that we had to get one of his rookie cards. After we got the card, we soft and hard sleeved it, and taped it to the window mantle in my boy’s room…It was JUST shortly before that we bought and autographed, serial numbered Mike Carp rookie card…Proud of you, Mike, and thank you for keeping it real, and doing the right things…Peace out to all and RIP Halman…You will always be remember as that guy that was SO impressive in the short time he had……………
