The defense was strong in the Seattle Seahawks 30-10 victory over the Denver Broncos to earn their second win of the preseason.
The secondary of the Seahawks did not allow quarterback Peyton Manning to throw a touchdown while coming up with two interceptions in the game. Safety Jeron Johnson and linebacker K.J. Wright each had one interception in the first half increasing the Seahawks total number of interceptions to four in the preseason.
Along with controlling the game in the air, Seattle’s defense was dominate against the run game holding the Broncos to only 38-yards on 15 carries.
What the Seahawks defense does need to improve on is getting to the quarterback. The only sack for Seattle came in the second half from defensive end Greg Scruggs. If Seattle can improve on the defensive line and attack the quarterback throughout the game, the defense could be one of the strongest in the conference.
On offense, the Seahawks were also able to move the ball well on the ground totaling 228-yards and a touchdown. Marshawn Lynch had 37-yards while Sutton led the team with 48-yards on three carries.
The second half of Saturday’s game belonged to rookie quarterback Russell Wilson who proved that he deserves to start against a first string defense.
Wilson totaled 155-yards completing 10- of-17, including two touchdown passes, one to running back Tyrell Sutton and the other to tight end Cooper Helfet. The rookie also showed off his ability to run the ball earning 33-yards on five carries in the half.
Matt Flynn, who started the game for the Seahawks, complete six passes for 31-yards but was unable to move his team down the field. Before anyone gets too excited about Saturday’s performance by Wilson, remember he has only seen the second string defense.
Head coach Pete Carroll has to consider starting Wilson for the next game so he can get a look at a strong defensive unit and see if the rookie can still produce the numbers he has over the last two games for Seattle.
Seattle’s defense needs to keep performing like they have in the last two games while Wilson continues to demonstrate why he deserves the next start against the Kansas City Chiefs as the Seahawks look to go 3-0 on the preseason.
