What started as a three way competition has dropped to two, and what seemed like a sure win for one quarterback is now an even split between Matt Flynn and Russell Wilson for the starting quarterback role for the Seattle Seahawks.
After a couple of dynamic performances in the second half of the last two preseason games, Wilson has earned a starting spot for the next game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday.
So far this preseason, Wilson has completed 22-of-33 passing for 279-yards including three touchdowns and one interception. Along with throwing the ball, Wilson also ran for 92-yards and one touchdown in these last two games.
The numbers appear far better than Wilson’s counterpart in Flynn who has completed 17-of-26 for 102-yards and one interception, but the difference is Wilson is playing against second and third string defenses.
Flynn has started both games this preseason and has seen, for the most part, the best defenses each team has to offer so comparing the numbers does not provide an accurate read out of each quarterback.
Head coach Pete Carroll has decided to give Wilson the starting job which will give a better understanding of his quarterbacks after he sees them both play against a starting defense.
With Wilson starting against a strong defense, Seattle will see if the numbers that have been produced in the second half against weaker defenses will still be there. If Wilson is still able to move the ball down the field with the ease he has had, the starting role should be falling his way.
Yes Flynn has played against the starting defenses in both games, but he still has not been able to move the ball or produce on offense. If Wilson is able to come out and get his team the lead early, he looks like the better choice over the free agent who really only had one break out game last year for the Green Bay Packers.
Wilson will start things off against Kansas City and Flynn will come in later in the game and continue to get some playing time this preseason. Once again last year’s starter is completely out of the mix and the teams looks to trade him rather than put him in the rotation.
