The Seattle Seahawks look to go 3-0 in the preseason this Friday when they take on the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Seahawks are coming off an impressive win over the Denver Broncos and hope to keep the winning streak alive as rookie quarterback Russell Wilson takes the field for the first NFL start of his career. Wilson needs to prove that he can continue to move the ball against the Chiefs like he has done in the second half of the last two games for Seattle.
One issue the rookie quarterback will face against Kansas City is figuring out who his main targets will be during the game. Wide receiver Sydney Rice will be making his preseason debut as he returns to the field after recovering from shoulder surgery during the offseason. Wide receiver Doug Baldwin, however, will not be playing this Friday due to a hamstring injury he suffered against the Broncos.
As far as the veterans go, Terrell Owens has one last game to prove to the Seahawks that he is more value than trouble to the organization. After a terrible performance against the Broncos that included a dropped pass that was a guaranteed touchdown, Owens has a lot of work to do to earn a spot on the team past the preseason.
The other veteran signing, Braylon Edwards, performed well in his first preseason game, catching two passes for 51-yards and one touchdown, but was shut out during the game against the Broncos.
With both these receivers at the end of their careers, one needs to step up against the Chiefs to ensure a spot on the roster once the regular season begins. With Owens dropping sure touchdown passes along with his history of being a cancer in the locker room, Edwards should win the battle at the end of the preseason.
Seattle will once again have to be strong in the secondary as they come up against Kansas City’s quarterback Matt Cassell and the return of wideout Dwayne Bowe. The Seahawks have come up with four interceptions in the preseason and are looking to add to that total in Friday night’s game.
Along with Seattle’s secondary, rookie linebacker Bobby Wagner and the defense will face a challenge in stopping a powerful running back in Peyton Hillis and running back Jamaal Charles, who is listed as probable for Friday’s game. So far this preseason the defense has done well in stopping the run, holding opponents to 123 yards in two games.
While the focus will be on seeing how Wilson handles his first against Kansas City’s starting defense, look for the defense to perform well and continue to make it difficult for opposing offenses to get into a rhythm.
If the rookie quarterback is able to move the ball both in the air and on the ground successfully, and get his team the early lead, the battle for starting quarterback shifts slightly in his favor.
