The quarterback controversy for the Seattle Seahawks is down to two players as last year’s starter Tarvaris Jackson has been traded to the Buffalo Bills for an undisclosed draft pick. The deal was announced earlier today as the Bills work to finalize a contract with Jackson.
After a subpar season last year along with acquiring quarterbacks Matt Flynn and Russell Wilson, it comes to no surprise that Jackson has been traded. Wilson has performed well in the preseason and has moved into position to take over the starting role. Keeping Jackson on the roster made no sense at this point.
The Seahawks are already a young team looking to improve in many areas and trading Jackson puts them in perfect position to do just that. Having two young quarterbacks on the roster allows the organization to focus on other areas that are in need of improvement. Seattle traded away an aging player while adding a draft pick which will help bring in new players they can mold and adjust to fit their scheme.
Buffalo is a struggling team and it is unlikely they will have a successful season, which will land the Seahawks in a good position on the draft board come next April. Replacing age with the ability to bring in more youth allows Seattle to focus on improving the offensive line or adding depth in the linebacker positions.
With how well Russell has been doing, Jackson did not have a chance to start for the Seahawks and giving the roster spot to someone who can give effort on special teams will be far more beneficial to the young team.
