2012 NBA Draft Grade: Marquis Teague
Marquis Teague was the lesser known freshmen of the “Tucky Threesome”, but still managed to show enough potential in Kentucky’s National Championship run to be projected as a first round pick in this year’s draft. He is extremely athletic and the point guard has amazing court vision. Teague will be highly sought after this spring, so expect him be drafted in the first round. Below is my full draft grade of Teague heading into the upcoming 2012 draft:
2011-12 College Average: 10.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 0.9 steals, 0.3 blocks, 2.7 turnovers
Scoring: B Teague was never the most efficient scorer in his brief one-year college career. He only scored in double figures 16 of his 34 regular season games, but really stepped up by averaging 13.3 points a game throughout the 2012 tournament. He may not be the most confident scorer, but will become a better shooter as he matures.
Rebounding: C It was difficult to tell how well Teague could rebound during his short tenure in Lexington, especially with All-American center, Anthony Davis, surrounding any ball that came off the glass. However, Teague is not afraid to mix it up around the hoop, so he could eventually average around 3-4 boards a game in the right offense.
Size: B- At six-feet-two, 189 pounds, Teague is a little undersized compared to the majority of the point guards in the league. However, in recent years many of the point guards to come out of college have been of a similar build, like Philadelphia’s, Jrue Holiday, who is almost the exact same size as Teague. The former Kentucky star may actually need to drop a couple pounds in order to keep up with the faster guards in the league, but it is something that should not be concerning heading into the draft.
Athleticism: A The freshman is the most athletic point guard coming out in this year’s draft. He is very quick with the ball and extremely agile, much like his brother Jeff Teague who is currently playing for the Atlanta Hawks. His natural speed will help him get on the court early and his natural athleticism will help him stay there.
Projection: First Round
NBA Comparison: Denver Nugget’s Ty Lawson
