SEC Week 7: West 3, East 1 and UGA Beats Vandy

The SEC East and West faced off four times with the West dominating the East, winning three out of the four games. The only other game featured a nailbiter between Georgia and Vanderbilt.

#15 South Carolina Gamecocks 14, Mississippi State Bulldogs 12
This was a close game in which QBs, who were backups before the season started, started the game and both played decently well. This was the Gamecocks first game post-Garcia. And Shaw showed he has what it takes to win. Shaw threw the game winning touchdown to Alshon Jeffrey with 3:50 left in the game to put the ‘Cocks up 14-10. In the meantime, South Carolina might have lost potential Heisman candidate Marcus Lattimore for an extended period of time. If you’re a Carolina fan, keep your fingers crossed.

#1 LSU Tigers 38, Tennessee Volunteers 7
LSU didn’t play it’s best game, but beat a shorthanded Tennessee team soundly. The Volunteers are playing without starting quarterback Tyler Bray and wide receiver Justin Hunter. Matt Simms struggled in the place of Bray, throwing for only 128 yards and 2 interceptions. The Tiger defense held tough, allowing 239 total yards. And LSU QBs Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson combined for three touchdowns and 198 yards.

#2 Alabama Crimson Tide 52, Ole Miss Rebels 7
Mississippi struck first with a 1 yard Jeff Scott TD run set up by a 59 yard pass from Randall Mackey to Nikolas Brassell. But it was all ‘Bama after that. The Tide’s RB Trent Richardson strengthened his Heisman resume with a ridiculous 76-yard touchdown run to cap off his 183-yard and four touchdown day against the Rebels. This game just further proved the Crimson Tide are really good, and Ole Miss is really bad. It was the Rebels worst loss since 1981.

Georgia Bulldogs 33, Vanderbilt Commodores 28
I said in the preview column that this game would be close, closer than most people would think. I was right. Vanderbilt played Georgia tough and tight. Dawgs QB Aaron Murray threw for a career high 326 yards and three touchdowns. And while I said Vandy has a knack for turning the opponents ball over, it was the ‘Dores who gave the ball up, losing the turnover battle four to one. Georgia continues to roll with their fifth straight win and Vanderbilt will have to regroup and find a way to win three more to get bowl eligible.

Florida Gators 6, #24 Auburn Tigers 17
Both of these team’s offenses struggled as they used seven quarterbacks between the two teams. Special teams turned out to be the difference in this game with Florida having some costly special teams miscues. For more on this game, click here.
