Ex-Gators QB Arrives In Jacksonville, Is Benched, Leaves
A national title-winning quarterback at the University of Florida made a triumphant arrival in Jacksonville, sparking Floridians to wonder if a championship was in the near future.
Unfortunately for Chris Leak, his tenure with the Jacksonville Sharks may include one game.
A veteran of NFL and CFL rosters, Leak caught on with the defending Arena League champions and led them to a victory in the opener against Kansas City.
However, his backup was getting all the headlines (sound familiar?) and the team’s front office named former Bowling Green star Omar Jacobs the starting quarterback.
Leak didn’t take kindly to the demotion, passed on practice and earned a suspension. There’s no word as to whether he’ll return to the Sharks.
It’s been that sort of week for Jacksonville and ex-Gators. The Jaguars offered a higher pick and more compensation on Tim Tebow‘s advanced salary and he still ended up in New York. Chris Leak returns to the state where his greatest gridiron achievements took place, throws five touchdowns in a win and receives a seat on the bench.
There’s a soft spot for Leak to college football fans because he’s so roundly ignored for guiding Florida to a national championship in 2006. Yes, Tim Tebow was a third down and red zone option on that Gators offense but Leak was the mainstay. Writing that Tebow led both of Urban Meyer‘s BCS titles at Florida is like giving credit to David Bryan for Bon Jovi’s success.
You’re in the band but you’re not the attraction, enjoy the ride dude.
Leak likely isn’t done in the Arena League and considering Tebow’s tools as an NFL quarterback, he might soon accompany his former college teammate there.
