Report: Garrick McGee is Arkansas’ Primary Target To Replace Bobby Petrino
According to reports, former University of Arkansas offensive coordinator Garrick McGee is the primary target to replace the recently fired Bobby Petrino as the new head coach of the Razorbacks.
McGee was named head coach of the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers in December 2011, and has been acting in that capacity but has yet to coach the Blazers with his first coaching action set for this fall.
If the Razorbacks were to hire McGee the move makes sense from several perspectives. First, and most importantly, there would be continuity in systems and theory which Bobby Petrino put in place on offense– systems which allowed Tyler Wilson and the Razorbacks to be one of the country’s most productive units in 2011.
The Arkansas offense finished eighth in the c0untry in total offense per game in 2011, as they averaged 489 yards per game and 37.3 points per game.
With Tyler Wilson’s decision to forgo the NFL Draft and stay in Fayetteville, continuity is essential.
Installing a new system for a senior quarterback just flat out doesn’t make any sense, so, regardless of whether Garrick McGee does get the nod as the new head man for Arkansas, you have to figure the Jeff Long and the school’s athletic administration will hire someone from inside or one with direct ties to the university.
McGee at first glance would appear to be a natural fit in an effort to maintain the coaching staff and prevent many from departing for new opportunities in the turbulent months that are sure to come ahead as a strange story continues to get stranger as new details come to the surface.
