Manchester City have suspended Argentine striker Carlos Tevez for two weeks pending review following the player’s alleged refusal to enter Tuesday’s Champions League match against Bayern Munich.
It’s safe to say that City manager Roberto Mancini was not happy with his striker after the game.
“He refused to come on the pitch,” said Mancini.
“What I said to Carlos is between me, him and the team [but] I am really disappointed because it is Carlos. I decide the changes.
“If I have my way he will be out. He’s finished with me. If we want to improve as a team Carlos can’t play with us. With me, he is finished.”
Surely you cannot blame Mancini for not wanting Tevez to be part of the squad any longer. The Argentine has been nothing but a distraction this season, following a summer in which he uttered his desire to leave the club.
But Tevez stuck to his guns and claimed that the incident was a ”misunderstanding.”
The striker told Sky Sports:
“I would like to apologise to the Manchester City supporters, with whom I have always had a strong relationship, for any misunderstanding that occurred in Munich,” said Tévez.
“They understand that when I’m on the pitch I have always given my best for the club,” said Tévez. “In Munich on Tuesday I had warmed up and I was ready to play.
“This is not the right time to go into specific details as to why this did not happen but I wish to state I never refused to play. There was some confusion on the bench and I believe my position was misunderstood.”
It looks like the club have sided with Mancini, and rightfully so. Tevez’s two week suspension is not only deserved, but necessary.
City released the following club statement regarding the latest saga surrounding Carlos Tevez:
“Manchester City can confirm that striker Carlos Tévez has been suspended until further notice for a maximum period of two weeks.
“The player’s suspension is pending a full review into his alleged conduct during Tuesday evening’s 2-0 defeat by Bayern Munich.
“The player will not be considered for selection or take part in training whilst the review is under way.”
It would be safe to bet that Tevez may well likely have made his last appearance for Manchester City. City already have three prolific strikers and could afford to let the Argentine go, which seems to be the club’s only option.
