The Manchester United forward’s father and uncle were arrested by authorities at a Scottish Premier League (SPL) match following an investigation into a potential betting scandal.
Rooney’s father, also named Wayne, has denied the allegations.
“Detectives have today executed warrants at 10 addresses across Merseyside and Glasgow and arrested nine men as part of an investigation into suspicious betting activity,” said the Merseyside police.
“The arrests are the culmination of a joint operation with the Gambling Commission.”
According to a report, several bets were placed on there being a red card in an SPL match. The largest of the bets was reportedly 500 pounds, the equivalent of $765, placed at 10-1 odds. In Lehman’s terms, if you bet $765, you win $7,650.
Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings was sent off in the match. It was no coincidence that the player was one of the nine men arrested by the Merseyside police.
It does not look good for the accused midfielder. Surely Steve Jennings will now be viewed as the Pete Rose of Scottish soccer.
Does it get more shameful than intentionally letting your team down for a few extra bucks?
Certainly not.
