This Is Anfield: A Summary Of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool Debut
Today marked Brendan Rodgers‘ first game at Anfield as Liverpool boss, but did we learn anything from the match (aside from the fact that ESPN’s David Pleat didn’t know who The Reds were playing against)?
Well, we learned that Luis Suarez is looking extremely sharp and seems determined to become Liverpool’s star player this season. Having signed a new contract during the week you might have expected the Uruguayan to be a little complacent or lethargic but instead he proved that the powers that be at Anfield made the right decision in offering him an extended contract. His mazy runs terrified the Gomel defence who, had it not been for a good showing from their goalkeeper, could easily have let Liverpool’s number seven in to score several goals. He was alert when running off the last defender and his link play with Steven Gerrard would not look out of place in even the silkiest of Barcelona attacking moves. Suarez was the best player on the park tonight and the Kop sang his name with vigour from start to finish.
In tonight’s class we also learned that Daniel Agger looks quite unlikely to leave Liverpool having appeared tonight sporting his new YNWA tattoo. If he was planning on leaving the club then getting “You’ll Never Walk Alone” tattooed on his knuckles probably wouldn’t be a good idea. Besides this, the team that Rodgers put out tonight was almost his strongest eleven so I have my doubts that he would have played Agger if he thought the Dane would be jumping ship any time soon.
At the other end of the pitch new signing Fabio Borini looks to be settling into the Liverpool squad well, having managed to grab an impressive goal on his Anfield debut. It wasn’t just his goal that made him shine though as the Italian played a storming game on the left wing, communicating well with his team-mates and getting in a number of good crosses. The former Roma player looks like he is shaping up to have a good first season for The Reds.
In other transfer news Joe Allen was at Anfield to watch what looks increasing likely to be his new team playing in their Europa League qualifier tonight. Liverpool are rumoured to have activated a release clause in the Welshman’s contract and all eyes are on Anfield with Allen’s signing expected to be announced in the not-too-distant future.
