Wigan At
Wigan Athletic have booked one the biggest days in their club’s cup history, with a 3-0 away at Everton meaning they have reached their first ever FA Cup Final, and their first appearance at the new Wembley stadium.
It is a big day for the club, although they will have their sights firmly set on staying in the Premier League in the coming months. An FA Cup final and possible win there would provide a historic day for the club, but relegation would mare all of that with the further implications that will later come.
But the real story is that Everton and David Moyes have failed to get into a very achievable semi-final. Moyes’ contract expires at the end of the season and it was very clear that whatever his future may hold, he had his sights fully set on silverware.
Moyes’ long and relatively successful period at Everton since 2002 has been near faultless, and the only thing you could really say is missing is some silverware. They came close in 2009, losing to Chelsea in the FA Cup final, but this was possibly the last chance.
Now Moyes may feel that, with the contract coming to a close, it is a good opportunity to move on to a club where he can realistically achieve more rather than tie himself into another 2-4 years at Everton, whose future isn’t all that hopeful.
Their stadium plans appear to have hit a dead end, and the transfer budget isn’t going to allow for any further development of the squad.
Who knows what the new opportunities may be, or where he could go, but one certainly wouldn’t question the motives of moving to a more ambitious club.
